THE ORIENTThe Orient was the place of his birth. His eyes would burn through
me like the early morning light reaching from the land of the rising sun.
His scales were countless like the stars twinkling in the night sky.
I could hear his stories echoing deep in my heart, ringing like wind
chimes hanging high in the sky. I listened for his voice every day.
It seemed to me he was the wisest of dragons. His claws would grasp my heart,
his piercing eyes looked straight through me. He spoke;
“I only tell stories to dragons I once knew.”Copyright David Hoffmann © 2008 – All Rights Reserved
TOUCHED BY SNOWA small girl on a frozen pond… skates in hand.
A small pond… trees nearby… snow is falling.
A bench to put on her skates.
A twinkle in her eye.
Touched by the wind on her face.
Spinning… spinning… spinning.
Snowflakes are falling.
Together, a picture.
A young woman kneels near the ice.
Her eyes catch the eyes of a small girl there.
Spinning… spinning…
She feels the presence of eyes upon her.
An old woman sits on the bench.
Her thoughts drift…
Eyes twinkle behind closed lids.
Painting pictures in the snow.
A small girl arrives… she sits on an empty bench.
Snowflakes fall.
She looks over a frozen pond… trees nearby.
A gust of wind… snowflakes spinning.Copyright David Hoffmann © 2008 – All Rights Reserved
INTO THE NIGHTA falling star
landed in my heart last night
after traveling through
a canopy of forever.Like a final note, striking
in a silent symphony,
hanging brilliantly
throughout the night.I too, like a falling star,
will eventually let go
knowing deep within my heart
She will catch my last tear. And though my spirit yearns
to soar among the stars…
and hears the call
“Come home…”“Come home.”
I know the hardest thing
I ever will do…
is take that final, forever
step,into the night.

Emptiness listens—
and plays upon taught heartstrings
Patiently— she waits

HOLLOWHollow timpani
beckons—
emptiness sings
It’s silent song.Simply intricate
in its glorious arrangement—
subtly quiet.
Omnipresent.Vibration
ceasing—
overwhelming
deafening hush.A moment ticks
beyond yourself,
Drum beat— Heartbeat—
Silent beat—Copyright David Hoffmann © 2024 – All Rights Reserved
FIERY HEARTSHer fiery eyes
danced and flashed.Crisp
morning air parted
joyously.The
steamy dog
chased
round and round
again and again—smiling.
The brave young lad held tight
the steering wheel of his
shiny new trike.Snow flakes
dancing.A beacon of joy—
the helium filled
blue balloon—
went
round and round
again and again.Snow flakes
flying.Behind the giant frozen
water fountain
the eager red trike
slipped and slid
in a Tokyo drift
along the
snow-covered path.This day—
This day—would
remain forever frozen—
in fiery hearts.Copyright David Hoffmann © 2015 – All Rights Reserved
SILENCEPeer into eternity—
Starlight’s twinkles
are speaking
an ethereal
whisperExpanding endlessly —
drawing ever closerFalling forever
through the hush—
quiet the lonely
silent screams
of your aching
homesick heartComfort yourself—
Bathe in the rich black ink
of a thousand voices—Silently speaking truth

LOSS
She had always loved
the twinkling lights
upon the tree.
Her eyes now
were still. Dry.
Mine dampened.
Peering into her
seeking the familiar joy,
I found only a fading spark.
Her tongue was parched.
Her lips cracked—
Mine quivered.
My cheeks glistened
as I failed
to hold back tears.
My throat tightened
as it choked
on swallowed salt.
Her courageous heart
was silent.
Mine pounded— longing to follow.
Gathered with grief,
I am alone—
Christmas, no longer a joy.Copyright David Hoffmann © 2024 – All Rights Reserved

DAWN
Pink hues delight in dance…
softly touching their fingers
upon feathery yawning clouds. The honking, not of the city,
emanates from the V of outstretched wings
pointing intently toward the shifting light.Untethered barking in the wilderness,
are songs sung by wild dogs
singing longingly to a setting moon.Pink hues…
marvelously meandering…
fading gently into the day.https://davidhoffmann11.wordpress.com/
